The People's Democratic Republic of Yemen
, commonly referred to as South Yemen, became independent as the People's Republic of South Yemen in 1967. In May 1994 South Yemen rebelled once again from the united Yemen and established the short-lived Democratic Republic of Yemen
.
As of 2007, massive protests and rallies by citizens demanding a return to the former southern state have been common, both in the southern provinces of Yemen and internationally. Many southern Yemenis complain that the government (compromised mainly of northern officials) is abusing the unity agreement, claiming unfair distribution of resources and discrimination against them.
