List of members of the Parliament of Syria, 1961
Encyclopedia
This is a list of deputies elected to the Syrian parliament of 1961. The Syrian parliamentary election
was held on 1—2 December 1961. There are no official records, but the number of eligible voters was estimated at between 1,000,000 and 1,250,000. More than 1,800 candidates, among them 11 women, contested for the 172-seat constitutional assembly. Participation in the various constituencies varied between 48—84%, "a figure not reached in Syria before."
Many veteran deputies were re-elected—as many as 54 of the 142 deputies from the 1954 assembly. It was suggested that the brevity and the limitations imposed on campaigning favored the better-known candidates. None of the eleven women candidates were elected. It was generally agreed that the results were a victory for the right. The success of the Muslim Brotherhood
, considered an "extreme right" party, and the "anti-Nasser" elements were also noted. As far as party affiliation, the People's Party
had remained the strongest faction, which attracted many of the independents; the National Party
and the Baath Party
followed.
