Lockleys is a suburb of the city of Adelaide, South Australia.

History

The area was subject to flooding by the River Torrens

, which originally never ran out to Gulf St. Vincent, until the Torrens channel, named Breakout Creek, was cut in to replace and drain the wetlands, called "The Reedbeds." A large part of Lockleys is within a bend of the River Torrens.

Activities and sport

Lockleys is home to the Lockleys Football Club who play in the SA Amateur Football League. The team boasts popular local voice-over artist Adam Morgan in its coaching ranks, along with magarey medalist Mark Naley as development coach.

Mellor Park on Henley Beach Road has a tall tree which is decorated each year as a Christmas Tree.

The local guide group is Lockleys Guides, and the local scout group was 1st Lockleys Scout Troop until it closed in March 2001.

Kooyonga Golf Course is located in Lockleys and has previously hosted the South Australian Open Golf Championships.

Lockleys is the home of the former Odeon Star, now Windsor, Lockleys Cinema, Henley Beach Road.

Religion

The area has several churches.
St Richards of Chichester is the Anglican church, St Francis of Assisi is the Catholic Church and a former Baptist church, which is no longer in use. The area also had a Uniting Church on May Terrace, but this site was recently sold and a brand new state-of-the-art building was constructed on Sir Donald Bradman Drive in front of the Adelaide College Of Divinity. The Adelaide West Uniting Church holds three services each Sunday, and has gained much respect in the local community with demonstrated commitment to the youth of the area and also to newly arrived refugees making their home in the western suburbs. An African worship service is held at the church on Sunday afternoons each fortnight.
