By 1994 the route, now operated by Leaside Buses, was one of the busiest in London, with a peak vehicle requirement of 50 buses operating at a frequency of one bus every two minutes.
For many years, route 253 operated as two separate but overlapping routes, one from Euston railway station
to Hackney Central railway station
, and the other from Aldgate tube station
to Holloway
Nag's Head. The latter service was split to form route 254
in 2003.
In January 2005 it was reported that the route suffered from a comparatively high number of robberies. This followed its selection by the Metropolitan Police
as one of 28 routes to target.
The contract to operate route 253 was retained by incumbent operator Arriva London North in November 2009, together with the related night bus route N253.
