area route scheme to link Forest Gate
and Upton Park with Plaistow
and Canning Town
. This had previously been covered by route 58
, but this was altered to run to East Ham
. Buses operated beyond the Canning Town terminus of the old 58 as far as the new bus terminus at Blackwall DLR station
, which the route shared with route 40.
The opening of the first stage of the Jubilee Line Extension
saw the route curtailed to the new interchange station at Canning Town, which also connected with the Docklands Light Railway
and the National Rail North London Line
as well as the JLE. The main advantage of this is that buses were removed from the severe congestion in the Leamouth
area, which is at the confluence of several major roads, a bus being saved in the process. This did, however, make the route rather short, at about 6 miles in length.
Initial operation of the 330 was using DRL-class Dennis Dart
s, but these were quickly replaced by S-class Scania double deckers. These were themselves replaced by low-floor Dennis Trident 2
double deckers. In the most recent tender results, the route was retained by Stagecoach East London (which became part of East London Bus Group before being reacquired by Stagecoach).
It was announced in 2009 that the route would be extended to Canary Wharf
by the end of the year. Local residents ran a campaign to get the route extended to Wanstead
High Street, claiming that this would improve transport capacity in the area during the temporary closure of Wanstead tube station
. A petition gained 250 signatures. Another petition which had started earlier, in October 2008, had already received 116 signatures.
As of August 2010, neither extension had taken place, with the route continuing to operate only between Canning Town and Wanstead Park.
