London Buses route 466
Encyclopedia
London Buses route 466 is a Transport for London
contracted bus route in London, United Kingdom. The service is currently contracted to Arriva London
.
. This route was planned to be diverted from its traditional terminus at Chipstead Valley to Caterham, but local opposition saw the 166 continue to serve Chipstead Valley and the 466 introduced to serve Caterham. At the other end of the route, the 166 was diverted to West Croydon
, while the 466 took over its previous service to Shirley
. The changes were implemented in 1998, with the 466 replacing previous route 400 over the section to Caterham, with a frequency increase as a result.
The introduction of the Croydon Tramlink led to substantial changes of bus services in the area. Route 466 was amended to only run as far as Shirley Library and Shirley Way, and diverted at Trinity School
to Addington Village
.
The route was at first run by Arriva London
, but 2003 saw major expansion for Metrobus who won the contract to operate the 466 that year. It was run from the company's Croydon garage and a batch of Scania Omnidekka
s were ordered. These were the second batch for the company, following route 64's
conversion to the type.
The contract transferred back to Arriva London on 30 August 2008. New Alexander Dennis Enviro400s were introduced, but electrical problems on the vehicles led to reliability issues. In October 2008 the route was criticised for seeing too many southbound journeys turn short at Old Coulsdon
. Residents began a petition to improve reliability on the route, receiving around 700 signatures by December 2008. From 17 January 2009, Arriva introduced extra vehicles to the 466 to allow longer layovers and reduce the need to turn journeys short.
