History
Long Lake has a rich history. In the early part of the 20th century logging predominated and there were many Scandinavian immigrants who made their home in Long Lake. One of them was John Erik Johnson who came with his family from Sweden in the 1880s. He was a founding father of Long Lake, served as the first Postmaster, the Town Clerk, and Justice of the Peace. He married a French Canadian woman, Margaret Celia Douyette in Breed, Wisconsin and moved his family to Long Lake early in their marriage. He and his wife ran one of the town's grocery stores. The Johnson General Store was located just south of the hotel. John and Margaret had 12 children. Three died in childhood and, although seven of their sons served in WWII, only one died in the war. William "Grubho" Johnson had received a Purple Heart before his death and received another posthumously after his death in Belgium, where he was buried at his parents' request.Geography
