The event was formerly classed at Listed level, and it used to be called the "Lonsdale Stakes". For a period it was contested over 1 mile, 7 furlongs and 198 yards. It was promoted to Group 3 status in 1998, and to Group 2 in 2004. On the latter occasion its name was changed to the "Lonsdale Cup". Its distance was extended by 110 yards in 2007.
The Lonsdale Cup is now held on day four of York's Ebor Festival
meeting. The leading horses from the race often go on to compete in the following month's Doncaster Cup
