at Nativity Church in Dubuque
until 1940, when he became an instructor in Spanish
and economics
at Loras College. He was president of Loras College from 1951 to 1956.
On May 29, 1951, Lane was appointed Auxiliary Bishop
of Dubuque
and Titular Bishop
of Bencenna by Pope Pius XII
. He received his episcopal
consecration
on the following August 20 from Archbishop Leo Binz
, with Bishops Joseph Clement Willging
and Edward Aloysius Fitzgerald
serving as co-consecrators
. Lane was later named Bishop of Rockford
