 for Congress campaign as field director. He continued his service with Congressman Strickland serving as his representative to constituents in Jefferson, Belmont, Noble and Monroe Counties. Gentile was appointed Assistant Director of the Governor’s Office of Appalachia in January 2007, and served until 2010.

unable to run again due to term limits, Gentile opted to replace him. He faced four others in the primary election, and received 52.41% of the electorate to win the nomination. He faced Republican Mark Clark in the general election, and won with 66.25% of the vote.

Gentile was sworn in on January 3, 2011 to take his first term. He is serving on the Agriculture and Natural Resources Committee, the Financial Institutions, Housing and Urban Development Committee and the Public Utilities Committee. He also is a member of the Ohio School Facilities Commission; the Children’s Trust Fund Board; the Muskingum River Advisory Council; the Belmont County Transportation Improvement District Board of Trustees and the Technical Advisory Committee to Assist the Director of the Ohio Coal Development Office.

As a member of the Ohio School Facilities Commission, Gentile is critical of a decision that reverses to require contractors to pay union-scale wages or to require the use of union workers through project labor agreements. "I'm concerned that we could be creating a race to the bottom and not getting skilled, qualified construction trades to build our schools," said Gentile, a nonvoting commission member.
