The school takes its name from St. Ignatius of Loyola, a sixteenth century saint, who was recognized for his devotion to education and is best known for founding the Society of Jesus. Loyola High School is run by Jesuit Priests and welcomes students from diverse ethnic, cultural and economic backgrounds.
Loyola is an English medium school and offers Marathi and Hindi as compulsory languages up to the 8th standard. High School students have the option of taking up German. There is a strong emphasis on Science, Mathematics and the Arts. History, Civics and Geography are also offered.
Loyola High School and Junior College is recognized by the Government of Maharashtra and prepares students for the Maharashtra State Secondary School Certificate (SSC, Std X) and the Higher Secondary Certificate (HSC, Std XII) examinations. The school is rated the third best school on India after Cathedral and John Connon School Mumbai. It is the PSAA (Pune Schools Athletic Association) Champions of U12, U14 Football Championships, and PSAA champions for chess in the city.

School Uniform
Boys from class 1 to class 9 wear half-sleeved beige shirts and dark beige shorts. Whereas class 10 boys where dark beige trousers and the same shirt. Junior college boys where full-sleeved beige shirts and dark beige trousers. The rest of the uniform consists of brown shoes and a brown belt. From 2011 a new uniform was introduced on fridays. Its a off-white polo T-Shirt with the Loyola emblem. The PT uniform consists of the house coloured sleeveless T-shirt and shorts.Alumni Associations
The Ex-Loyola Students' Association (ELSA) has arranged career seminars, inter-school quiz competitions, sponsored the school magazine and arranged the school's 25th year celebrations. Today ELSA stands inactive but the Ex-Loyola Alumni Network (ELAN) has been formed by another generation of ex-students. ELAN has been active for over a decade now. It organises annual get-togethers for ex-students. It is now the official ex students body of the school, ELSA being officially merged to ELAN.ELAN supports school activities and assists former teachers. ELAN is planning the Golden Jubilee celebrations of the school in 2010-2011

- Loyola High School and St. Vincent's High School share a rivalry in sports which is evident during the Riklin Cup matches played between the two schools.The Riklin Cup was stopped in 1987.
- It is voted as one of the Top 10 Schools in Pune.
- It is one of the few schools which has "cross-country" as part of physical training for its students.
