Lucas de Wael was a Flemish

(1558–1633) and Gertrude de Jode, making him a cousin of Pieter de Jode II
. His brother, Cornelis de Wael
(1592–1672) accompanied him on his trip to Italy where they settled in Genua. When Anthony van Dyck
visited Genua he stayed with the brothers.
Lucas was known mainly for his etchings, but he also has a reputation for painting in oils and frescos. Most of his work is landscapes and port scenes with ships. He rarely signed his works, which makes attribution difficult.
