In the city the population was spread out with 23.0% under the age of 18, 6.8% from 18 to 24, 23.4% from 25 to 44, 23.3% from 45 to 64, and 23.4% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 42 years. For every 100 females there were 77.0 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 71.1 males.

History
The town of Luverne was founded in 1889 in the central part of Crenshaw County with the intention of becoming the terminus of the Montgomery and Florida Railroad Company. The new station was a success and Luverne grew. In 1893, the citizens of Crenshaw County voted to move the county seat from Rutledge to the more populous Luverne.Geography
