General

The Anti-Tank Guided Missile vehicle (ATGM) provides an antitank overwatch capability that allows the Brigade Combat Team (SBCT) to concentrate on decisive maneuver by dismounted infantry. It represents the primary tank killer of the SBCT, capable of defeating any armored threat out to extended ranges using the TOW missile system. The ATGM Vehicle provides standoff for the force by use of its precision long-range capability capable of destroying enemy armor beyond tank gun effective range.

The ATGM vehicles are primarily operated by an independent Infantry company assigned to each of the Stryker brigades. In the 2nd and 3rd Stryker Cavalry Regiments, O Troop

Operational capability

The ATGM is based on the ICV platform due to the close parallels of operational requirements and battlefield capabilities between the two systems. The ATGM is an organic vehicle to the ICV maneuver formation and helps maximize commonality of the platform while simultaneously reducing the maintenance footprint and variety of logistics support.

The ATGM MAV will provide the brigade’s primary tank killing capability. The ATGM MAV will fire the brigade’s heavy antitank missiles to destroy high value threat targets at extended ranges in order to defeat enemy armor before the enemy tanks can return effective fires. The brigade commander will utilize the brigade’s separate antitank company, armed with these ATGM MAVs, to shape the battlefield, to reinforce the brigade’s infantry battalions, to serve as a member of the brigade reserve, to reinforce the brigade reconnaissance squadron in the counter-reconnaissance fight, and to counterattack the enemy’s operations. This dedicated ATGM system allows the remainder of the brigade’s MAV fleet to be optimized for specific capabilities that can function under the antitank overwatch umbrella.
