The MP 59 is a rubber tired
variant of electric multiple unit
s used on Paris
's Métro
system, and is the oldest type still in regular passenger service. Manufactured by GEC Alsthom, they were first introduced in 1963 when the busiest routes of Lines 1
and 4
were converted to rubber tired pneumatic operation. Fifty-two trains operated on Line 1, and they were refurbished between 1989 and 1992 in readiness for the extension of Line 1 to La Defense. Twenty-two of these refurbished cars were transferred to Line 11
from 1995 after the delivery of the newer MP 89
to Line 1. The unrefurbished cars on line 4 were scrapped.
Currently, the MP 59 trains on Line 4 are gradually being replaced by the MP 89CC
trains from Line 1, which will in turn be replaced by the MP 05
. MP 59 trains that are in best condition will be moved to Line 11 to improve service and prepare for future expansion of the line. When expansion of Line 11 is complete (2015/2016), the MP 59 on Line 11 will be replaced.
