Machaerotidae
Encyclopedia
The Machaerotidae comprise a small, distinct and interesting group of insects mainly inhabiting the Old World

. The adult often has a long, free and spine-like process
originating at the scutellum and is thus superficially similar to the Membracidae. Its tegmen
or forewing, like typical bugs of the suborder Heteroptera
, always has a distinct, membranous apical area. The nymph
constructs a calcareous
tube on some woody dicotyledons and immerses itself in a rather clear fluid excretion
inside the tube. The tube strongly simulates the shell of certain serpulid sea worms or helicoid
land snails and contain no less than 75% calcium carbonate

Insecta and markedly different from that of typical cercopoids or spittlebugs which make and live in a froth mass either subterranean or above-ground.
Old World
The Old World consists of those parts of the world known to classical antiquity and the European Middle Ages. It is used in the context of, and contrast with, the "New World" ....

Tropics
The tropics is a region of the Earth surrounding the Equator. It is limited in latitude by the Tropic of Cancer in the northern hemisphere at approximately N and the Tropic of Capricorn in the southern hemisphere at S; these latitudes correspond to the axial tilt of the Earth...

Process (anatomy)
In anatomy, a process is a projection or outgrowth of tissue from a larger body. The vertebra has several kinds of processes, such as: transverse process, prezygapophysis, postzygapophysis.-Examples:Examples of processes include:...

Tegmen
A tegmen designates the modified leathery front wing on an insect particularly in the orders Dermaptera , Orthoptera , Mantodea , Phasmatodea and Blattodea .-The nature of tegmina:The term tegmen refers to a miscellaneous and arbitrary group of organs...

Heteroptera
Heteroptera is a group of about 40,000 species of insects in the Hemiptera. Sometimes called "true bugs", that name more commonly refers to Hemiptera as a whole, and "typical bugs" might be used as a more unequivocal alternative since among the Hemiptera the heteropterans are most consistently and...

Nymph (biology)
In biology, a nymph is the immature form of some invertebrates, particularly insects, which undergoes gradual metamorphosis before reaching its adult stage. Unlike a typical larva, a nymph's overall form already resembles that of the adult. In addition, while a nymph moults it never enters a...

Calcareous
Calcareous is an adjective meaning mostly or partly composed of calcium carbonate, in other words, containing lime or being chalky. The term is used in a wide variety of scientific disciplines.-In zoology:...

Excretion
Excretion is the process by which waste products of metabolism and other non-useful materials are eliminated from an organism. This is primarily carried out by the lungs, kidneys and skin. This is in contrast with secretion, where the substance may have specific tasks after leaving the cell...

Helicoid
The helicoid, after the plane and the catenoid, is the third minimal surface to be known. It was first discovered by Jean Baptiste Meusnier in 1776. Its name derives from its similarity to the helix: for every point on the helicoid there is a helix contained in the helicoid which passes through...

Calcium carbonate
Calcium carbonate is a chemical compound with the formula CaCO3. It is a common substance found in rocks in all parts of the world, and is the main component of shells of marine organisms, snails, coal balls, pearls, and eggshells. Calcium carbonate is the active ingredient in agricultural lime,...

Class (biology)
In biological classification, class is* a taxonomic rank. Other well-known ranks are life, domain, kingdom, phylum, order, family, genus, and species, with class fitting between phylum and order...
