Many Bahraini athletes joined these protests which were aimed at achieving greater political freedom and equality for the majority Shia population. However, when the king of Bahrain declared martial law, Al Ajmi was one of the stars who were targeted. He was banned from playing for his club and the Bahraini National Team.
