Evans supplied cartoons to the New Zealand Herald for six years, but after publishing a number of cartoons featuring "classic anti-Semitic caricature types" was asked to stop creating cartoons on the subject of Israel. He was consequently dismissed in 2002. During his time at the New Zealand Herald he was twice awarded the New Zealand Cartoonist of the Year.
