The Maltese Second Division (also known as the Bank of Valletta Second Division due to sponsorship reasons) is the third-highest division in Maltese football
, behind the Maltese First Division
and above Maltese Third Division
. The league has been running for many years.
It is contested by 14 teams; the top two teams are promoted to the second-highest Maltese
division, the Maltese First Division
, whilst the three lowest-finishing teams are relegated to the Maltese Third Division
. Teams play each other twice.
On January 13, 2011, the Malta Football Association
decided to expand the league to 14 teams as from season 2011-12. .
