Mamuda Aliyu Shinkafi is a Nigeria
n politician. As deputy governor of Zamfara State
in 2002, he endorsed an Islamic judgement calling on Muslims to kill the fashion writer Isioma Daniel
after she wrote that the Prophet Mohammed may have approved of the Miss World
contest and perhaps would have wished to marry one of the beauty queens. The judgement caused riots in which more than 200 people died.
The Nigerian government hastened to declare that the fatwa
was null and void, and would not be enforced.
After two terms as Deputy Governor, Shinkafi was elected governor of Zamfara State in 2007 on the All Nigeria Peoples Party (ANPP) slate.
Later in 2008, Shinkafi defected to the rival Peoples Democratic Party
(PDP), causing considerable controversy.
In January 2009 the Zamfara State government refuted media reports that Mamuda Aliyu Shinkafi was running an illegal security outfit and terrorising politicians.
In September 2009, a Zamfara state court sentenced an ANPP politician to three years in gaol for saying that Alhaji Mamuda Aliyu Shinkafi's administration lacked focus and had misappropriated public funds.
