Pre-nineteenth century, the area of Manthorpe was agricultural and known as Little Gonerby-cum-Manthorpe. The Grantham to Lincoln road followed what is now Low Road, across the river behind Swallow’s Mill, through Belton Park and on the old route to the Roman

 just north of Manthorpe, built a new road from Grantham to Belton. Then, in the 1840s and 50s, new houses, a church and school were built together with the renovation of established properties.

In the early 20th century a few houses began to be connected to electricity and water—the rest still fetching their water from the village pump or their own well. Finally the Brownlow estate connected all household to water and electricity.

By the late 1940s, there were still only a dozen or so houses west of Manthorpe Road and Manthorpe was still a separate village to the town of Grantham. During the 1950s and 1960s houses were built west of Manthorpe Road also on the river side. In the 1960s the Manthorpe estate was built—prices were under £2,000, though average wages were £15 per week and less for women. When Lord Peregrine Brownlow died in 1978, more land became available and most cottages in Manthorpe village were sold.

Facilities

Manthorpe is home to the Grantham Central Technology and Sports College a co-educational secondary school. The only primary school is Cliffedale Primary School.

The area has its own Residents' Association.

The only shop in the area is a convenience store on the corner of Sandcliffe Road and Rushcliffe Road, however large supermarkets are quite close.

Grantham Hospital is located in the southern part of Manthorpe.
