In the late 1960s and early 1970s, Marcellin flirted with a co-educational campus, when year 12 students from Our Lady of Mercy College

The College philosophy promotes 'open entry' in terms of academic ability, encouraging students of all abilities to undertake their studies there. This is continued into the VCE where the majority of students are encouraged to complete their Year 12. The mainstream curriculum is augmented by extension programmes for the gifted and additional support for those with learning difficulties.

The College's facilities include specialist classrooms, learning technologies, performance venues and sporting venues. The 15 hectare property includes the playing fields used in the Associated Grammar Schools’ of Victoria competition, various Old Collegians' Sporting Clubs and also a few of the AFL

Leadership programme

There is an established Student Representative Council which allows students to be actively involved in various College matters to help organise functions and events relative to their student body. There is a SRC representative in each year level for each house for years 7 to 11. In year 12 there is a College Captain and two Vice Captains as well as House Captains and Vice Captains for their representative houses, who form the SRC Executive Committee. 2008 saw the introduction of various Academic Captains including LOTE and various Performing Arts Captains. This was also the year for the first World Youth Day Captain in conjunction with the World Youth Day
