Marie-Simone Capony was, at age 113, the oldest living person in France
for more than a year and a retired teacher. She became the French doyenne following the death of 114-year-old Camille Loiseau in August 2006. At the time of her death, aged 113 years and 185 days, due to heart failure, she ranked as the fifth-oldest person in the world

. She never married (her fiancé was killed in action at the beginning of the First World War
in 1914). Capony had not been able to walk since she turned 100, after having an operation in order to fix a broken thighbone, but she still remained in fairly good health considering her very advanced age.
She is listed on page 64 of the 2008 edition of the Guinness Book of Records
as one of the ten oldest verified people living as of 8 August 2007, the book's release date. For a short time, from September 2007 until October 2007, Capony was one of the 100 longest lived people ever.
