. When the show begins in 1965, Marie is planning to marry a man named Tony Merritt. Marie had, the previous year, been engaged to a wealthy man named Rick Butler, but that engagement was broken off in favor of Tony, who was her neighbor. The Merritt family had been friends with the Horton family; Alice knew Mrs. Merritt before she had died years before. Addie
, her sister, had considered Marie's decision to marry Tony a poor one, as Tony was "merely" a teacher, while Rick was wealthy, like Addie's husband, Ben Olson. Marie and Tony planned to wed on Thanksgiving 1965, but Tony called it off the night before and Marie fell into a deep depression. Marie's depression led her to attempt suicide, but Tony's father, Craig, helped her through her dark times. Marie eventually married Craig in 1966, and became pregnant with Craig's child. Soon, however, Marie had suffered a miscarriage, falling into another deep depression. Craig was unable to help Marie out of her depression and Marie began hallucinating and hearing the sounds of babies crying. Her miscarriage even caused her to doubt her belief in God, but she eventually returned to regularly attending church services. To make matters worse, Craig had found out why Tony dumped Marie: he had been diagnosed with a rare blood disease and did not want Marie to watch him die. Tony, however, had fully recovered. It became obvious to Craig that Tony still loved Marie, and divorced Marie to allow her to be with Tony.
Marie, however, was not the same woman she was before. She had found it hard to trust Tony and they broke up in 1967. Tony left Salem and Marie returned to Salem University Hospital as a lab technician. It was around this time that Dr. Mark Brooks came to Salem and Marie was assigned to be his research assistant. Soon, they fell in love and began dating. But Tom and Alice noticed striking similarities between Dr. Brooks and their dead son, Tommy. Mickey and Tom investigated and found proof that Dr. Brooks was Tommy. Tommy had been a POW in the Korean war and presumed dead, but saved a Soviet Soldier's life and was given a reconstructed face in return. Marie was devastated that she had been dating her own brother. She decided to leave Salem to become a medical missionary in Africa and eventually living in New York. When Tommy's ex-wife, Kitty, was killed by Bill, Marie returned to Salem, as a nun. (This was especially odd because up until this point, the Horton family had been portrayed as Protestant). Marie stayed in Salem until 1973, when she left town. She would return for a visit in 1977.
In 1979, Marie returned home, and ran into Alex Marshall. Marie had known Alex and his brother Haley from her time in New York. She had a fling with Alex while in New York and became pregnant. She had to give up her child, however, because she entered a convent. Marie left the convent in 1980 and went to look for her missing child, Angelique Horton. She discovered her daughter was now living as Jessica Blake. Alex had grown to love the young girl, and the two fought over her, but Marie never revealed that Jessica was actually Alex's daughter. Soon, Alex legally adopted Jessica, and Marie revealed the truth about her to Alex. Alex wanted to find out more information and he and Marie traveled to Canada, where she had been living. But their plane had crashed and the two were stuck together in a nearby cabin and their romance was re-kindled. Later that year, Jessica was told by Alex the truth of her paternity and she grew closer to Alex, but hated Marie for what had happened. Alex and Marie had planned to wed and Marie went to Montreal to resign. Marie and Alex were to get married, but the wedding was postponed when Jessica ran off to join a convent. Marie worked things out with Jessica, but her relationship with Alex was threatened by Mary Anderson.
Mary tried to convince Marie that Alex was having an affair and did everything imaginable to prove it. Marie eventually believed her. Marie left Alex, and shortly after was shot. Alex had no memory of who shot him and was paralyzed from the waist down. Marie moved in with Alex to take care of him, but would not pursue a relationship with him, just yet.
More problems came for Marie and Alex as Jessica had developed multiple personalities (Jessica, Angel, and Angelique). When Jessica's cousin, Hope
discovered the condition, she informed Marie, who promptly flew to LA to stop Jessica from marrying Jake Kositchek, who turned out to be the local serial killer, the Salem Stranger. Jessica suffered from a mental breakdown and Marie helped her through the long process. After all they had been through, Alex and Marie parted ways in 1982, never getting married, as they had always planned.
Marie then turned to a man named Dr. Neil Curtis. Neil had been rejected by a woman named Liz Chandler. Neil and Marie began to date and they married a few months later. Liz hated Marie for marrying Neil and Marie hated Liz because Neil still loved Liz. Soon, Liz snuck into the Curtis Apartment and slept with Neil. Later that day, Neil had to go to the hospital and left Liz at his and Marie's apartment. Marie returned home and Liz, thinking she was a burglar, shot Marie. Marie soon recovered, but Liz was sentenced to five years in prison. Neil and Marie divorced in 1983. Two years later, in 1985, Marie left town.
Marie has made returned home to visit several times since then. She returned in June 1994 for her father, Tom's, funeral, and again in 1996 for her niece, Hope's, wedding. She returns offscreen in January 2010 for her brother, Mickey's, funeral.
Marie returned to Salem in June 2010 when she received news that her mother, Alice Horton was extremely ill. Marie returned along with many other family members. She reminisced with Maggie and Julie about the wonderful times she shared with Alice. Several days later, she received news from her brother Bill that Alice died in her sleep. Before leaving Salem, she thanked Maggie for letting her stay while visiting Salem and promised to return soon.
