History

Markham’s newspapers had humble beginnings. The first such publications were the Farmer’s Gazette and the Markham Advertiser, which existed briefly in the late 1820s. Both short-lived papers were nothing more than one-page flyers.
In 1856, David Reesor

founded the Markham Economist, which flourished. Reesor sold the paper to his brother-in-law Henry Ryan Corson, whom became the paper's second publisher in 1860. In 1909, Robert John Corson, son of Henry R. became publisher and owner.

The paper's first office was at 124 Main Street (now Uncle Joe's Family Restaurant). Since 1881, the Economist’s rival, was the Markham Sun. The Sun was bought by the Economist in 1915, creating the Economist & Sun. Robert Corson was publisher of the new paper until his death in 1930. In the 1950s the paper moved to the old stables at 11 Joseph Street, vacated by the Markham Veterans and remained there until the 1970s. The current head office and printing operations are now located in a small industrial building on Heritage Driver. It is now part of the Metroland Media Group
