Hagge was born in Eureka, South Dakota
. She took up golf at the age of three and won the Long Beach City Boys Junior title when she was 10. Three years later she won several adult amateur titles and became the youngest player to make the cut at the U.S. Women's Open, finishing eighth. In 1949, at the age of 15, she became the youngest athlete ever to be named Associated Press Athlete of the Year
. She was the youngest of the thirteen women who founded the LPGA in 1950, and remains the youngest ever member of the LPGA Tour.
Hagge won 26 titles on the tour between 1952 and 1972. She was eighteen years and 14 days old when she won the Sarasota Open in 1952, and until Lexi Thompson won the 2011 Navistar LPGA Classic
