Although it may be nice to have had the world's oldest person on record be a native son, it is now also possible to disprove the story based on circumstantial evidence. As stated in German above, it is conceivable that one Joseph Brunner (born in 1739) - for whatever reason - used a baptismal certificate issued at a later date for his namesake Joseph Brunner (born in 1706). The explanation in the link above in German says that the Brunner born 33 years after the other Brunner may inadvertently have received the baptismal certificate at some later time in life and only realized the error after leaving the town where he got the certificate. At that point he may have been pleased to be so famous because of his age. Alternatively, he may have obtained his baptismal certificate and either when doing so or later decided to mislead others about his true age to gain a sizeable retirement benefit for his extreme old age from local nobility.
