The new building has five floors and a basement. There are two wings for patient rooms, the Wendel Wing and the Cornell Wing, as well as a cancer wing, the Phillips Family Cancer Center. The emergency department is located on the southwest end of the second floor. The maternity ward is located in the central area of the third floor. Visitor access, as well as retail space, is located on the Northeast side of the third floor. The cafeteria is located on the northeast side of the fourth floor.

Relocation
Over the years, the hospital expanded at its downtown-Charlottesville location on Locust Avenue. However, in the early 2000s, it was clear a new facility needed to be built to accommodate a growing number of patients and the ability to expand further in a more open area. Sale of the Old Facility

Merger
On September 29, 2010, Martha Jefferson Hospital announced its intention to merge with Sentara Healthcare. The merger was finalized on June 1, 2011, making Martha Jefferson the tenth hospital Sentara Healthcare’s not-for-profit integrated health system based in Norfolk, Virginia.External links
