who had already told the authorities (Ryan knew he had been reported, but not that it was Arif). Montgomery's confession was considered much more detailed than Arif's so Stanton was put in the hole until further evidence could be brought forward; the investigation for the Keenan murder was suspended as neither witness had enough evidence to make the claims superior to the other. This was Ryan's plan all along.

However, Montgomery decided that Ryan had not paid him enough after all, and demanded that he kept paying him otherwise; he'd tell Glynn the truth about Keenan. Ryan agreed to meet up with Montgomery in the prison-library to make a deal about his pay, but instead met up with Stanton in the gym and told him that he had "found out" who had lied about him. When Stanton asked, Ryan initially refused to say, to appear more innocent (and partly to make Stanton angrier), Ryan eventually revealed that it was Martin Montgomery, and a furious Stanton charged to the library, where he found Montgomery waiting, and stabbed him in the neck. During season six Stanton says that Montgomery survived, but he "can't sing anymore."
