History
MD 953 north of MD 450 was originally constructed as MD 199 in the 1920s. The MD 199 designation was removed from the highway in the 1950s and MD 193 was extended south along the highway to MD 953's present southern terminus in the 1960s. When Glenn Dale Boulevard was completed in 1986, MD 193 was moved to the new highway and the grade crossing of the Amtrak Northeast Corridor on old MD 193 was removed; part of the old alignment north of the railroad tracks is MD 953A. MD 953 was assigned to Glenn Dale Road shortly thereafter.Junction list
