On June 25, 2001, Ansara was found dead in his pickup truck. It had later become apparent that Ansara had died of an accidental heroin overdose two months before his 36th birthday.

He was divorced in 1995 from a two year marriage with Julie Ansara. Before he died, he was planning his second wedding with girlfriend Leanna Green on September 1, 2001.
