A rover, Dent started his career with Fitzroy in 1994 and remained with the club until they merged with the Brisbane Bear following the 1996 season. Instead of joining the newly formed Brisbane Lions he moved to Footscray and went on to play four seasons with the Bulldogs. He played with Hawthorn in 2001 to finish with a career tally of 118 games.
