In 1980 Matthijs van Nieuwkerk started his study Dutch, at the former Gemeentelijke Universiteit in Amsterdam, but he never finished his study.
With his friend Mark van den Heuvel he started interviewing sportsmen for the Dutch newspaper Het Parool
. Some of the famous people were the chess grandmasters Kasparov
and Karpov
and footballer Johnny Rep. After that brief period he began interviewing writers, and he totally changed the page for literature. In 1988 he became editor for the arts department.
But in 1996 he even became editor-in-chief of Het Parool
. Knowing that he needed a new challenge he started making TV for AT5, the television channel of the Amsterdam region in 2001.

noticed him and in 2002 he applied for the job of coordinator, which he got.
After six months he chose to start working in front of the camera's, he presented the political programme Nederland Kiest with Felix Rottenberg
in 2003, just before the elections.
NOVA, a Dutch programme about politics, scouted Felix and him, but a little while after their start they both left because of a row with the redaction. Unknowing of the impact that would be made, he started with De Wereld Draait Door
(literal meaning "The world keeps on turning", although "draait door" is also figurative speech for "goes crazy"), a huge hit that airs every day in the week, except for Saturday and Sunday. The programme received the 2007 Gouden Televizierring, the Dutch equivalent of the Emmy Awards, for best programme.
Another successful programme is Holland Sport, a Mondaynight programme where he and Wilfried de Jong discuss all kind of sports.
Leo Blokhuis, a music expert, and Van Nieuwkerk make the Popquiz and Top 2000 a Go-Go every year.
He was nominated for the Zilveren Televizier-ster for best show host in 2006 and 2007, but didn't win on either occasion.
Van Nieuwkerk also played judo, volleyball, baseball and cricket.
Youth magazine J/M had van Nieuwkerk as a writer of columns and he helped with a book about fathers.
