At the turn of the 20th century, the Scioto Marsh just outside of McGuffey had become a center of onion trade in the United States. In support of the onion workers, the American Federation of Labor (AFL) helped create the first chartered agricultural workers' union. Intolerable working conditions and low wages caused hundreds of workers to leave the fields in July 1934 and pour into McGuffey, leading to one of the most tumultuous strikes
in Ohio history.

living together, 15.0% had a female householder with no husband present, and 32.9% were non-families. 27.5% of all households were made up of individuals and 13.0% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.52 and the average family size was 2.98.
In the village the population was spread out with 28.4% under the age of 18, 9.2% from 18 to 24, 27.2% from 25 to 44, 20.1% from 45 to 64, and 15.1% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 35 years. For every 100 females there were 96.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 95.8 males.
The median income for a household in the village was $22,024, and the median income for a family was $25,313. Males had a median income of $26,875 versus $22,000 for females. The per capita income

The village of McGuffey, home of the first chartered agricultural workers' union and one of the largest agricultural workers' strikes in national history, was honored with a historical marker in August 1999 by the Ohio Bicentennial Commission.At the turn of the 20th century, the Scioto Marsh just outside of McGuffey had become a center of onion trade in the United States.
