A minor rivalry began in 2010 when Melissa unexpectedly beat Van Alstyne on Van Alstyne's home field by a fairly large margin. Van Alstyne is also a close city to Melissa and considered a local Class 3A football powerhouse.
Another minor rivalry exists between Melissa and Gunter. Both are considered local Class 2A football powerhouses and the winner of the matchup constantly changes.
A basketball rivalry exists between Melissa and Brock. In 2010 Brock knocked out Melissa during the playoffs, and in 2011 Melissa beat Brock during their run to the state tournament.
During the 2011 summer the Melissa Cardinals 7-on-7 football team won the Division II State Championship.
During 2010-2011 the Melissa High School Cardinal Band won numerous achievements in multiple competitions.
Since the 2010-2011 school year, Melissa High School has been ranked an exemplary school by the Texas Education Agency.

Notable Athletic Runs
In the 2010-2011 season the Melissa Cardinals basketball team made it to the State Quarterfinals for Class 2A in Austin, Texas before being beat by the Tatum Eagles. During most of the season Melissa was ranked #1 in the entire state for Class 2A.During the 2011 summer the Melissa Cardinals 7-on-7 football team won the Division II State Championship.

In 2010 Melissa High School's One Act Play crew advanced to Regionals where their run ended.During 2010-2011 the Melissa High School Cardinal Band won numerous achievements in multiple competitions.
