Metro Mondego
Encyclopedia
The Metro Mondego, part of the mass transit public transport
system of Coimbra
, Portugal
, is a light-rail network that run above ground in Coimbra into the city's suburb
s. Studies and planning are in progress but the Metro Mondego is not expected to be fully operational for some years. The network will have 2 lines and will reach three municipalities: Coimbra
, Miranda do Corvo
, and Lousã.
A major part of the plan is to rejoin the isolated section of existing rail line between Coimbra - Parque and Serpins to the rest of the rail network at Coimbra - B station. This will involve street running along Avenida Ermidio Navarro and Avenida da Lousa between the two existing stations of Coimbra and Coimbra - Parque.
There is at present a single un-electrified track along the street section that is used once a day for a scheduled train. It is also used to transfer rolling stock to and from the Coimbra - Parque station. Travelling north, the trains run in the opposite direction to road traffic along a one-way street.
