He began as a professor at Brooklyn College

, where he taught the classics. There, he was forced to resign in the midst of the McCarthy era. This was due to his unwillingness to answer questions about his political views and agenda. He took a few years off teaching and pursued outside interests after this forced resignation. In 1965, he had begun teaching again at Southern Illinois University

. During this endeavor, he had founded the Institute for the Classical Tradition. Also, he founded the International Journal of the Classical Tradition. In 1995, he became a visiting professor at Vanderbilt, in Nashville Tennessee.
Meyer Reinhold died in July 2002. He had a small family who were still living, his brother and his daughter, Helen Reinhold Barret, and her two children. He had a son who had died in 1996. Reinhold had become interested in classical studies after he had read Virgil’s Aeneid
