Costa began his career in October 2006, winning via triangle choke. This was followed up in March 2007 with another win, this time by unanimous decision. After taking a year out of the sport, Costa returned and defeated Siai Carrasco via rear naked choke.

. The promotion then set up an eight-man, two-event grand prix to decide the champion. Costa decided to apply, considering that 115 lb was his natural weight, as opposed to the 123 lb he had been competing at previously.

Costa faced Pedro Mascote in the opening round, defeating him unanimous decision, before facing Evandro dos Santos in the semi-final. Costa then defeated dos Santos via armbar after just 45 seconds.

The two tournament wins resulted in Costa reaching the final. The winner of the final will be crowned the inaugural Shooto 115 lb South American Champion and will take place at Shooto - Brazil 20. Costa will face Lincon de Sa
