Michelle Delio
Encyclopedia
Michelle Delio is a freelance writer whose articles have appeared in Wired News
, InfoWorld
, and MIT Technology Review
. She has also written under her maiden name 'Michelle Finley'. It was alleged Delio may have made up 'colour quotes' for some of her stories. Of 160 stories reviewed, 24 had problems with at least one source and four include possibly fabricated quotes. No evidence was forthcoming to suggest the actual substance of the articles was skewed.
The incident began when Delio published an article at MIT Technology Review
based on an interview with an anonymous insider at Hewlett-Packard
who claimed the existence of a misogynistic attitude at the company towards then-CEO Carly Fiorina
and female staff in general. Members of Hewlett-Packard
management reacted violently and threatened to sue MIT Technology Review
if the source was not revealed. Delio's protection of her source is rather common and understandable, but Hewlett-Packard
management then accused her of fabricating the entire story. Under legal threat, MIT Technology Review
retracted the article and Wired News
began their own internal study, leading to inconclusive results.
