Hanna grew up in the inner-northern suburbs of Melbourne
, where he played his junior football in Brunswick East
.
He was known in the VFL/AFL for his athletic physique and blistering pace playing as a tall running wingman.
Hanna debuted as a skinny kid in 1986, however he had the misfortune of rupturing the anterior cruciate ligament
in his knee during his debut game. During his rehabilitation, he spent the entire year building his body in the weight room, after which he went on to forge a distinguished and largely injury-free career with Carlton.
He played in two AFL Grand Final
s (1993; 1995), including a premiership medal (1995), and achieved All-Australian team
selection (1992).
Hanna now owns a cafe, the Fitz Cafe, in Fitzroy
