northwest to U.S. 75 at Doran. In the 1950s, when U.S. 75 between Ada and Crookston was rerouted to another roadway, the Highway 9 designation was extended along former State Highway 82 from Breckenridge to Ada and along the former route of U.S. 75 to its current northern terminus.
In 1963, Highway 9 was extended again, replacing State Highway 17 from Benson to New London. This section had been part of State Highway 23
until around 1940.

The last section of Highway 9 to be paved was the old State Highway 82 section north of Breckenridge
