Montbello has become more "inner city" in character because the neighborhood is known for its gangs and crime, which has also affected nearby areas such as the Parkfield neighborhood as well as Green Valley Ranch. During the boom of the late 1990s and early 2000s, real estate prices in this ZIP code were high and in sync with the rest of metro Denver. Since the economic downturn, Montbello has suffered increased crime and gang presence due in-part to the gentrification of some East Denver neighborhoods, with former residents of those areas moving to Montbello where homes are selling for as little as $75,000.
