Morgan-Giles was educated at Clifton College
and joined the Royal Navy
. He commanded HMS Vigilant
, Vernon 1959-60 and HMS Belfast 1961-62. He was President of the Royal Naval College

1962-64. He had farming interests in Hampshire
and New South Wales
.
Retiring from the Navy in 1964, Morgan-Giles was elected a Conservative
Member of Parliament at the Winchester by-election
in the same year. He served until 1979, when he stood down and was succeeded by John Browne
. He is currently the second-oldest surviving former MP, after Edward Short.
He has written an autobiography for the benefit of his extensive family, called "The Unforgiving Minute".
He was knighted in 1985 New Years Honours List.
