In 1993 he was honored with the Humboldt-Prize, in 1997 with the Jacob-and Wilhelm Grimm Prize of the German Academinc Exchange Service, in 2002 with the Dr.Leopold-Lucas-Prize of the university of Tuebingen and in 2006 the Lessing-Prize for critique. His focus of research are the social history of the 18th and 20th century of Germany as well as of the German Jews and Anti-Semitism.
