Encyclopedia
The Muslim Democratic Party or MDP is a political party in Belgium
which was formed in 2003, as a result of the poor showing of the alliance RESIST
between the Marxist-Leninist Workers Party of Belgium
and the AEL (Arab European League
, a popular Muslim and Arab nationalist movement) at the 2003 Belgian federal elections.
The party was founded by Dyab Abou Jahjah
, Lebanese-born leader and founder of the AEL. The first elections in which the MDP took part were the Regional Elections of 13 June 2004
in Flanders. The party filed candidates in the provinces of East Flanders
and Antwerp
and got even worse results than RESIST in 2003: 2,882 (0.27%) in Antwerp and 1,305 (0.14%) in East Flanders. The party has since been disbanded.
