district, the high school is located in a suburban area approximately nine miles north of downtown Minneapolis and Saint Paul
and includes seven cities with 76,193 residents. In the '07-'08 school year the school had a student enrollment of 1,926 students and a senior class of 514 students. The school is predominantly white with 13.5% of students being other races. It includes grade 9-12, and was founded in 1955. It is one of two high schools that are in the 621 school district (the other being Irondale High School

state championships, Mounds View Track and Field is the most successful high school track and field program in Minnesota. The program became a powerhouse in the late 1990s under the tutelage of coach Ross Fleming. The program went undefeated in 1999, 2000, 2001, and 2007.
The program was created in the spring of 1955, during the school's first year. In 1958, Bob Stewart joined as an assistant. That same year, Stewart founded the school's cross country program and became its first coach. Stewart took over as head coach of the Mustangs in 1963 and maintained that position until 1985, when he stepped aside for Fleming to take the top position. In 22 years, Stewart led the Mustangs to 10 conference championships, six regional championships, eight individual state champions and one relay state championship. Stewart left the program for three years to coach his son at Hamline University
before returning to Mounds View as an assistant from 1991 to 2004. Following his retirement, the school named its renovated facilities the Bob Stewart Track.
Numerous Mounds View alums have gone on to Division 1 track and field careers. Mounds View Basketball
For over fifty years the Mounds View Mustangs have been a pillar of success in Minnesota boys' high school basketball. The Mustangs have made 13 appearances in the state tournament with two state championships and several conference championships. There have only been two coaches in school history, Jim Geske and Ziggy Kauls. At the end of the 2011-2012 season, Ziggy Kauls will be retiring after 45 seasons. In addition, the home floor for the Mounds View Mustangs will be renamed Kauls court. Ziggy Kauls is 3rd all-time in wins for the state of Minnesota. The program has also produced three Mr. Basketball Award winners since its inception in 1975 (Steve Schlotthauer 1986, Nick Horvath 1999, and Travis Busch 2005).Mounds View Science Olympiad
The Mounds View Science Olympiad team has been one of the most successful teams in Minnesota in the last few years. The team competes with 60 schools across the state in 23 different events (much like an "academic" track meet). It has won 5 of the last 8 state championships, allowing it to compete in the National Science Olympiad tournament, hosted at a different university every year. The highest the team has ranked at nationals has been 15th, which occurred at the 2011 Tournament at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. Typically, the team medals (placing top 6) in two to four events. In the 2008 Tournament, Mounds View placed 2nd in Ecology, 6th in Robot Ramble and 6th in Flying Bird. In 2010, however, the team failed to rank in even the top five in the state competition, placing 7th overall. In 2011, the team managed to win the state tournament, setting a new record in Minnesota. At Nationals, Mounds View placed 15th out of 60 teams, the best placing for a Minnesota team in 10 years. The team also placed 1st in Fossils and 6th in Remote Sensing.Mounds View Math Team
Following a tradition of Mounds View Mustang strength in inter-school competitions, the Mounds View Math Team is also one of the powerhouse teams in Minnesota. Although it competes in several invitational and smaller scale competitions, the team mainly focuses on the two main Minnesota mathematics competitions: the Minnesota State High School League (MSHSL) Math Competition and the Minnesota Math League. Since its beginning as a powerhouse in 1995, Mounds View has accumulated numerous prestigious championships. The biggest target championships of Mounds View (and the majority of top math teams in the state) are the MSHSL regular season championship (the team that has performed the best overall in the season), the MSHSL state tournament championship (the winner of a one-day meet between the top 35 teams of the regular season), and the Minnesota Math League Champions. Mounds View competes in the North Suburban division of the MSHSL, but division champ is more of an expectation than goal, since it has captured the 13 of the last 14 championship titles, only missing it in 1997.Mounds View's record:

Mounds View Econ Challenge
The Mounds View Econ Challenge Team has been very strong for the past few years. Coach Martha Rush started entering teams into this competition in 2008 at the regional level. The teams have made it to the state competition each year and have been extremely successful. In 2011, the team made it to the National Economics Competition in New York with competitors Andrew Ovshak, David Petersen, Benjamin Rush, and Conrad Zbikowski. Mounds View Boys Tennis
Mounds View Boys Tennis has had a very strong tradition of winning. Michael Cartwright is in his 20th season as head coach. The Mustangs have earned 3 State Championships including back to back wins in 2004 and 2005. They have made it to the State Tournament in ten consecutive years. The Mustangs are currently playing in the Suburban East Conference and are the only team from any sport in the conference to never have lost a conference match. In the past five years the Mustangs have placed 2nd in state twice, 3rd once, consolation once, and 6th place once. Currently, Wyatt McCoy is the #1 singles player. He won the individual State Championship as an 8th grader and was a runner up in 7th grade and took third in 9th grade. He took 2 years off high school tennis to pursue national and international tournaments.
