and was formed from out of part of Coal Township
. It contains the boroughs of Mount Carmel
, Kulpmont
, and Marion Heights
within its borders.

In the township the population was spread out with 20.9% under the age of 18, 5.5% from 18 to 24, 23.4% from 25 to 44, 24.8% from 45 to 64, and 25.4% who were 65 years of age or older.
