Haque ran for the first Mayoral election of Sylhet City Corporation (SCC) against Badar Uddin Ahmed Kamran
(March 20, 2003). Recently, he appears to be significant again in the field of nationalist politics by leading one of the fractions of bnp with some bigwigs in the committee.
Haque expressed his interest to participate the mayoral election of SCC; and was considered as one of the most powerful candidates for the run. however, he had to concede defeat to Badar Uddin Ahmed Kamran.
