The Mumbai Urban Transport Project is a project formulated by the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority
to bring about improvement in traffic and transport situation in Mumbai
metropolitan region with the assistance of World Bank
. It envisages investment in suburban railway projects, local bus transport, new roads, bridges, pedestrian subways and traffic management activities.
The project is currently under implementation and is expected to be completed by 2008.
Under this project, the Mumbai Rail Vikas Corporation
, a joint venture of Indian Railways
and Government of Maharashtra
was set up for implementation of railway projects in the Mumbai metropolitan region.
The total estimated cost of the project is Rs.
45.26 billion (approximately 1 billion US dollars). Most of the money is to be spent on railway projects while less than a fourth of the money is to be spent on road projects, the costliest of which are estimated to be the Santa Cruz - Chembur link road and the Jogeshwari - Vikhroli
link road.
