Oliver began his National Hockey League
career with the Detroit Red Wings
. He would also play with the Boston Bruins
, While in Boston, Oliver centered the B.O.W. line with wingers John Bucyk & Tommy Williams, where he starred as a crafty, smallish playmaker. He later played for the Toronto Maple Leafs
, and Minnesota North Stars
. He played 18 NHL seasons, (1958 - 1975), and made the All-Star Game
five times. Following 1127 regular season games, Murray had recorded 274 goals and 454 assists for a career total of 728 points. After retiring, he was hired by former teammate Lou Nanne
as a Minnesota assistant coach. He stayed there until the 1985–86 NHL season, when he was let go. From there he resurfaced as a scout with the Vancouver Canucks
and later took over as the club's director of pro scouting.
